Miami Modern style Colonial Motel in Sunny Isles

The Colonial Motel in the Miami Beach suburb of Sunny Isles, was a spectacular specimen of a Space-Age sub-genre of Miami Modern or MiMo architecure.

Also called Populuxe, this flamboyant roadside design aesthetic was charcteristic of the 1950s and '60s, but is disappearing fast.

I made this photo in July 1996, but The Colonial has since been demolished to make way for a high-rise apartment building.

Historic preservationists are trying to save many endangered MiMo buildings, including some other small, but truly remarkable landmarks.
