A beat-up lawn chair at a retirement home in an old Art Deco, Miami Beach hotel in 1996, when many senior citizens still lived in South Beach.

Since then, artists and hip entrpreneurs and, later, mainstream tourists and well-to-do condo-dwellers took over the neighborhood, which is quite posh now and is no longer thought of as "God's Waiting Room."
