A distinguished looking rhesus monkey @ Nepal's Monkey Temple, Kathmandu Valley
A distinguished but intense looking rhesus monkey at Swyambhumath, Nepal's Monkey Temple, atop a hill overlooking the city of Kathmandu and its lush, surrounding valley. A troop of perhaps 300 semi-wild, semi-tame temple monkeys live on the hill, subsisting mostly on the small food offerings people leave on Buddhist and Hindu altars there. The sacred monkeys -- who are the size of smallish dogs -- are also not above stealing food right out of the hands of unwary pilgrims. Many generous visitors will, however, voluntarily feed the monkeys, similar to the way people in the West might feed pigeons in the park.
